Accounting Manager
McFarland Cascade, a Stella-Jones Company, produces treated wood products, including utility poles, lumber, composite decking, and more. The Tacoma, WA corporate office is seeking an Accounting Manger to lead our team. This role will provide Accounting support for the purchase and production of logs into utility poles.


The Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision of the Production Accounting US Division, including the supervision of 7 Accounting staff. The Manager is responsible for ensuring Accounting Theory is applied to the Department's business transactions from Multi-Phase Logging Contracts, Pole and Log purchase, Log Sales Contracts - Accounts Payables & Accounts Receivables, to accrual or depletion entries, responsible for various key GL account reconciliations and Cost Reporting.


The Accounting Manager works closely with Woodland Operations Staff and Management to ensure accurate Job Costing of Timber Harvesting activities (Logging, Road Construction/Maintenance, etc.) for Internal Reporting of P&L by Land Tract/Job. They also work closely with Sr. Production Managers in reviewing Pole Manufacturing Costs by Species and Location.


The Accounting Manager hosts monthly meetings/calls to review Timberland P&L Statements and Fully loaded White Wood Costs.


The Accounting Manager oversees the Company's Pole Production Computer Systems (Log Scale/Classing Software) in multiple States; the Manager must have strong skills with systems integrated to ERP Systems, must be willing and able to travel throughout the US as/when necessary for system installations, training etc.


The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring proper application of tax legislation on the Company's Manufacturing Facilities in multiple jurisdictions; both tax exemptions on payables and tax collection on Yard Log Sales.


Responsibilities:
Management Reporting
 Wood Costing of Poles at 20+ production facilities; costing by species, per cube and per piece
 Wood Cost Blended with Purchase Wood; along with analysis of Inventory Sub-cut impact on wood cost of sales
 Wood Cost by Species/Class/Length with Actual Fiber & Manufacturing per piece; as compared to Barkie Fiber Cost per Piece Target
 Manages variances between standard cost and actual costs, and performs regular inventory revaluation to manage variances; works with Sr. Production Manager to establish new Standard PO's when warranted.
 Woodlands Month Profit/Loss by Job; with forecast to actual comparatives
 Log Sales Reporting by Species/Sort/Customer
 Prepares Weekly & Monthly Production Volume Reports, Cut-to-Cruise
 Annual Budget Preparation for Woods P&L and WW Pole Costs for FOB Treating plants
 Calculates Actual Cost of Goods sold on Logs for Sr. Management & CFO Review


General Accounting Management Duties
 AP – reviews and approves 3 weekly Check Runs; Ensures Suppliers and Contractors are properly classified for 1099 vs 1099S reporting
 AR – ensures sales are accurate and receivables subledgers (by load) are accurately maintained, and collectible. Works with Operations Management to collect Receivables on Key Customers respecting relationships.
 GL – Responsible for the preparation of multiple Month-end Journal entries and various Key GL Account reconciliations; reviews and approves JE's & Working papers prepared by staff
 IN – Responsible for ensuring systems are running and processes are moving forward suchthat inventory updates occur daily

Timber Contract Accounting Management Duties (WEEKLY Contractor Pay Responsibilities)
 Reviews Logging Contractual obligations and Timber Appraisals with Foresters and Production Accountants on a project-by-project basis to evaluate that calculations of Barkie Transfer Price follow policy, Stumpage Accruals or Depletion and determination of depletion rates for related Road Construction or other Projects.
 Reviews all Contractual Obligations Managing Bid, Payment, Performance and Other Bonds as needed.
 Reviews and approves Weekly Logging and Log Sales Contracts for Contractor pay; validating that all required contract phases (obligations) are triggered
 Reviews and approves Barkie Purchase Contract Pay Statements from Sr. Accounting Clerk prior to final, high level review of load values and validation of pay/deductions or contras apply are properly applied
 Reviews coding of Contractor Invoices to validate coding is accurate for Company Accounting Procedures/Policies, and Job Costing including Government Project Development Credits
 Ensures Log Sales Adjustments meet contract rates and/or conversions


Production Yard Accounting
 Reviews Yard Payables for tax application in consideration of Manufacturing Tax allowances etc.
 Reviews Yard Log Sales for Sales Tax application
 Reviews Yard payables for consistency in coding between locations
 Coordinates Annual Inventory Count of Poles at Production Yards


Month-end Responsibilities
 Prepares and Enters various Journal Entries
 Reviews and Approves entries done by Accounting staff, Stumpage Accruals, General Prepaid and Payables entries
 Reviews and Reconciles various sub-ledgers (AP, AR, IN), and performs Entity's month-end close in ERP System.
 Cost Reporting


Requirements:
Customer service mindset - the role interacts with customers, internally and externally who look for your expertise and guidance to get the job done. Be the subject matter expert that teammates look to for technical support.
Accounting knowledge – 4-year degree in Accounting preferred, CMA, and over 2 years of Supervisory experience and over 2 years of experience working in Accounting in a Manufacturing environment.
Love of technology – data entry heavy, with the use of Outlook, spreadsheet software, database software, and Enterprise Accounting software.
Flexibility – the role does require long hours during month end close and annual inventory as well as travel to support the locations across the country.
